Now Google Adwords Showing Three Line Ad Sitelinks

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

We’ve seen reports and is also seeing some Adwords ads displaying with three lines of sitelinks, and Google has updated its help documents to indicate that “up to six” and “Three Line” Ad Sitelinks are now being displayed.

Previously, Ad Sitelinks were only displayed in one-line, two-line and embedded formats. Generally speaking, the multi-line Ad Sitelinks are only displayed when the ad is deemed an ideal match for the user’s search query, and is usually triggered by a query that includes a brand name.

Sitelinks are an AdWords extension that permits advertisers to include up to 10 direct links to internal pages on their sites, and Google then chooses which of those to display for a particular query. Google also recently expanded the number of Sitelinks that display in organic search results, as well.

Google Targets Facebook with New Social Networking Service

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Google Inc is making its boldest move to take on Facebook in the fast-growing social networking market and to maintain its dominance on the Web.
Google, which has been frustrated by a string of failed attempts to crack the social networking market, introduced a full-fledged social network on Tuesday dubbed Google+. It is the company's biggest foray into social networking since co-founder Larry Page took over as chief executive in April.

Page has made social networking a top priority at the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, whose position as the main gateway to online information could be at risk as people spend more time on sites like Facebook and Twitter.

"They had the luxury of making mistakes in the past with their social initiatives. They don't really have that luxury now," said Ray Valdes, an analyst at research firm Gartner, referring to Google.

"Companies that are successful with the social web will get the page views, they'll get the engagement and they'll eventually get the advertising dollars that are so important to Google," he said.

Google+, now available for testing, is structured in remarkably similar fashion to Facebook, with profile pictures and newsfeeds forming a central core. However, a user's friends or contacts are grouped into very specific circles of their choosing, versus the common pool of friends typical on Facebook. ( here )

Enticing consumers to join another social networking service will not be easy, said Rory Maher, an analyst with Hudson Square Research.

"They're going to have an uphill battle due to Facebook's network effects," said Maher, citing the 700 million users that some research firms say are currently on Facebook's service.

"The more users they (Facebook) get, the harder it gets for Google to steal those," he said. But he added that Google's popularity in Web search and email could help it gain a following.

To set its service apart from Facebook, Google is betting on what it says is a better approach to privacy -- a hot-button issue that has burned Facebook, as well as Google, in the past.

Central to Google+ are the "circles" of friends and acquaintances. Users can organize contacts into different customized circles -- family members, coworkers, college friends -- and share photos, videos or other information only within those groups.

"In the online world there's this 'share box' and you type into it and you have no idea who is going to get that, or where it's going to land, or how it's going to embarrass you six months from now," said Google Vice President of Product Management Bradley Horowitz.

"For us, privacy isn't buried six panels deep," he added.

Facebook, which has been criticized for its confusing privacy controls, introduced a feature last year that lets users create smaller groups of friends. Google, without mentioning Facebook by name, said other social networking services' attempts to create groups have been

"bolt-on" efforts that do not work as well.
Facebook, in an emailed statement, said "we're in the early days of making the Web more social, and there are opportunities for innovation everywhere."

Google+ started rolling out to a limited number of users on Tuesday in what the company is calling a field trial. Only those invited to join will initially be able to use the service. Google did not say when it would be more widely available.

Google, which generated roughly $29 billion in revenue in 2010, said the new service does not currently feature advertising.

LEARNING FROM BUZZ

Google's stock has been pressured by concerns about rising spending within the company and increasing regulatory scrutiny -- not to mention its struggles with social networking. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, among others, is currently reviewing its business practices.

Its shares are down almost 20 percent this year after underperforming the market in 2010.

To create Google+, the company went back to the drawing board in the wake of several notable failures, including Google Wave and Google Buzz, a microblogging service whose launch was marred by privacy snafus.

"We learned a lot in Buzz, and one of the things we learned is that there's a real market opportunity for a product that addresses people's concerns around privacy and how their information is shared," said Horowitz.

Google drew more than 1 billion visitors worldwide to its websites in May, more than any other company, according to Web analytics firm comScore. But people are spending more time on Facebook: The average U.S. visitor spent 375 minutes per month on Facebook in May, compared with 231 minutes for Google.

Google+ seems designed to make its online properties a pervasive part of the daily online experience, rather than being spots where Web surfers occasionally check in to search for a website or check email.

As with Facebook's service, Google Plus has a central Web page that displays an ever-updating stream of the comments, photos and links being shared by friends and contacts.

A toolbar across the top of most of Google's sites -- such as its main search page, its Gmail site and its Maps site -- allows users to access their personalized data feed. They can then contribute their own information to the stream.

The company has combined the Facebook and Twitter models of social networking in Google+: A person can have friends in their network with whom they share information and they can also follow certain people, say a movie critic, as occurs on Twitter.

Google+ will also offer a special video chat feature, in which up to 10 people can jump on a conference call. And Google will automatically store photos taken on cell phones on its Internet servers, allowing a Google+ user to access the photos from any computer and share them.

When asked whether he expected people to switch from Facebook to Google+, Google Senior Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra said people may decide to use both.

"People today use multiple tools. I think what we're offering here offers some very distinct advantages around some basic needs," he said.

Online Reputation Management (ORM) News

Friday, April 29, 2011

Bad News Burial Service Online Reputation Management:

The fact that you found this article is may be due to one of the tactics that we use when it comes to Online Reputation Management  (ORM) or  Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

This article explains a little about why there is a growing demand for Online Reputation Management services for both individuals and companies alike. It also talks about some of the methods we use to influence search engines
using search engine optimization (SEO).

If it’s true that you found this through Google or Yahoo, then you’ll also see why using search engine optimization forms a critical part (both on and offline) of managing  online reputation.

Online Reputation Management: A New Age

The days when news was spread by only by TV, radio. Today there is no faster (or better) way of spreading information than the internet.  Negative or incorrect information published online by critics can spread quickly and damage your company’s reputation if left uncorrected.

Even if you have operated a business ethically and cleanly for years,  all it can take is one negative event to blemish  public brand image.  This event may affect your business and it can be ongoing…costing you customers, business and money.

Simple things like a negative product review in a blog or forum can have negative effects to brand or you personally, and can be surely damaging if you operate in a environment where competitors are ready top act after you.

Online Reputation Management (ORM) is Becoming essential

Google it.  It’s what we do.  If I want to buy a new car, I’ll Google it.  Same thing for any other and even for researching the best internet market companies to use in NZ.

As consumers we also research company brands (as well as individuals), with search engines giving fast and convenient access for performing due diligence.

As broadband internet increases in NZ, as more and more people start using search engines to research, the demand for online reputation management ORM) services will increase.

Social Networking and Online Reputation Management

At the time of writing, Face book has displaced Trade Me as the number one accessed site in NZ (after Google).  Social networking then, is becoming a more important internet medium.

Consumers (and competitors) now have a voice for which to share ideas information and contacts.  And that includes negative or even malicious information about any brand and any person.

Reactive and Proactive Reputation Management

There are two ways that companies can act when it comes to online reputation management (ORM).

    * First is the proactive management of  brand.  This involves the ongoing monitoring of news, social networks, customer feedback, forums etc.  Often, damage to reputation may be happening without knowledge.

    * Reactive reputation management involves the relegation of harmful information in search engines , once it appears as well as publishing information that refutes negative, malicious or damaging information.

So how do we do this?

There are a number of ways we achieve this.  One way is to use effective keyword analysis and the effective creation of these online assets which contain factual and positive information.  Next we use link-building and other ‘off-page’ SEO techniques to elevate the rankings of these sites.

Online Reputation Management (ORM)

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

It goes without saying that Online Reputation Management (ORM) is a vital to consider for you and your company. More and more people are doing research online before they do business with a company or individual. Just as shoppers utilize review sites and comparison shopping engines, HR departments use Google search.

This makes Search Engine Reputation Management (SERM) extremely necessary. This involves making sure that there are enough positive listings ranking for name or brand in the search engines. The idea is to shield search results from negative reviews indexed by the search engines. There is a good chance that negative reviews will rank for name/brand. Go ahead “Google” yourself to see if anything negative is there.

There are two types of online reputation management. Proactive reputation management and reactive reputation management.

Top 5 Great On Page SEO Tips

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Most of the time, we are very busy concentrating on link-building and nailing the off-site aspects of SEO to please Google and tend to avoid the on page aspects. If you want long-term, long-lasting SEO success, you have to pay close attention to your on page SEO also. We’ve put together our top 5 on-page SEO Tips to help you.

1. Optimize Title Tag

Your title tag is vitally important for SEO. Don’t simply include company’s name and leave it. Priorities main keyword at the start of the title tag and ensure that it reads naturally and doesn’t take up any more than 64-70 characters. Any longer than this, and Google will cut the end off.

2. Utilize Link Text Properly

The text that makes up a hyperlink is that tells Google what the target page is about. Want Google to associate a page with a specific term? Use that term in the anchor text of the hyperlinks and you’re half done. However, make sure that your text reads naturally and won’t put off humans in favor of search engines. Remember the audience.

3. Don’t forget the alt attributes

Many people neglect alt attributes on images. Essentially, this text tells browsers what the picture is about, seeing as most are unable to read and decipher images. This is important  for W3C validity, but the real bonus is an SEO one. If image is linked to another page, the alt text will act as the equivalent of anchor text in a text-based hyperlink. By using the keywords in the alt text, you can squeeze a little bit more SEO benefit out of the pages.

4. Keep The Code Clean and Valid

Having code which is clean and structured and conforms to W3C standards will ensure that search engine spiders and browsers are able to read and navigate site effectively, as well as being able to extract the relevant content from the site and discover its focus. Making life easier for Google will make life much easier for us, and we’ll see the benefit in your search engine rankings in no time.

5. Above All, Keep The Quality High

The temptation is always there to spam your pages in order to get the search engine benefit but make your site completely useless and unintelligible for human visitors. Think about it – what use is it being at the top of the search engines if your users can’t find their way around your site or work out what you’re trying to say from your jumble of heavily-See’s text? Keep your users at the front of your mind at all times, and search engines will follow.

Two new Google domains: Iraq and Tunisia

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Google offer search on different regional domains, such as google.in for Indian and google.ru for Russia, in order to provide the most locally-relevant results. Google've steadily brought Google to many of the world's domains, and today Google announced their Arabia Blog that they're adding two more: google.iq for Iraq and google.tn for Tunisia. This brings the number of local Google search domains worldwide to 184, with 15 domains in Arab countries.

The new domains will help people in Iraq and Tunisia find locally relevant information, faster. For example, a search for [central bank] on the Iraq domain yields results relevant to someone in Iraq, such as the Central Bank of Iraq. On the other hand, the same search on the Tunisia domain returns slightly different results.

The new domains also make it easier for people in Iraq and Tunisia to access search in their preferred languages. In Iraq, people can now easily access Google search in local languages like Arabic and Kurdish; while in Tunisia, people can find the Google interface in Arabic and French. In the past, people in these regions would need to visit the domain for another country to use Google in an interface they were comfortable with. And when they did, the results would be relevant to a different region.

They’re also an integral part of our vision to make all of our products available in the world's top 40 most spoken languages covering 99 percent of Internet users worldwide. We plan to add more domains in the coming months, so stay tuned!

Google accuses China of blocking Gmail

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Chinese government is playing a new role of interfering with G mail, its online email service, making it difficult for users to gain access of Google. It has been accused by Google earlier.

Over few weeks, Gmail access has been intermittent for users inside China, and some foreign journalists have reported that their accounts have been hacked into.

The problems have coincided with what appears to be an intensified campaign by the authorities to control the internet, following the unrest in the Middle East and a series of calls on the web for a similar "Jasmine" revolution in China.

Google said they could find no technical problems with Gmail or its main website.

"There is no technical issue on our side; we have checked extensively. There is a [Chinese] government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail," the company said in a statement.

Two weeks ago, Google also said that it had noticed "some highly targeted and apparently politically-motivated attacks against our users" in China. "We believe activists may have been a specific target," it added.

Google decided to close down its mainland China website and relocate its operations to Hong Kong following a series of attacks from Chinese hackers at the end of 2009.

The hackeres stole some google source code and also hacked the some gmail accounts of the Chinese Human Rights advocates.

The Chinese Foreign ministry had no immediate comment on Google's statement.

Meanwhile, computer analysts also said that China has rolled out a new layer of censorship infrastructure to prevent internet users inside China from "jumping over" the Great Firewall.

Until now, internet users, including many businesses inside China, have established private networks which help them circumvent censorship and send information confidentially.

However, several companies providing these "virtual private networks" have reported that their systems have been nullified in the past week.

Bing Market Share up 5%; Google Down 2% in February 2011

Saturday, March 12, 2011

Experian Hitwise's monthly look at search market share is out, and not much changed since January. Google is at top, Bing is coming up, Yahoo is still around the corner and the rest of the 69 search engines are mere and not worth mentioning.

After the jump from 21% in December to January, Bing increased its market share to 13.49% in February, up from 12.81 percent in January. Yahoo powered by Bing, experienced 3% gain (14.99 percent, up from 14.62 percent), meaning Bing-powered search had a 28.48 percent market share in February.

Search market share  of Google fell again, to 66.69% from 67.95 %.
Yet again, Matt Cutts will not be pleased, but both Yahoo and Bing saw much "search success rates" (i.e., searches lead to visit to a website) than Google -- 81 percent vs. just under 66 percent.

After increasing by 5% last month, longer search queries also declined in February by 2%.

Facebook is not closing down on March 15

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

If you spend a better part of your life living out of Facebook, rejoice. Facebook won’t be closing on March 15 after all. Surprised? Read on …

More than one million people have already fallen for a hoax that claims that the popular social networking site will be shutting down on March 15.

According to IT security firm Sophos, a bogus news story published by the Weekly World News, said Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had told reporters that managing [Facebook] has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.

Some panic-stricken Facebook users and mischief-mongers spread the story far and wide across the internet in no time. Although Facebook debunked the hoax via its Twitter account late on Sunday, users still continue to pass the bogus messages onto their online friends.

The Weekly World News article went on to quote another company official, Avrat Humarthi, vice-president of technical affairs at Facebook, as saying After March 15th the whole website shuts down. So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.

Sophos said that many people would not believe the report, which comes from a newspaper that has previously reported George Clooney is running for president and that alien spacecrafts will visit earth in 2011. However, it only takes only a small number of people to think it might be possible to turn a joke of a news story into an internet hoax as has been proved many a times in the past few years.

I certainly wouldn’t disagree that users would be wise to have their own backup of their photographs, rather than rely on Facebook — but it’s nothing more than a scare to suggest to people that they have to do it before March15th because Facebook is going to close down, explained Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

There’s an important lesson here — don’t believe everything you read on the internet, and think twice before you pass a story on to your friends.

Although a hoax is not as serious as malware worming its way between users and stealing information, it’s still a nuisance, clogging up communications, increasing the overall level of spam and perhaps leading people to make decisions for the wrong reasons.
