Google accuses China of blocking Gmail

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Chinese government is playing a new role of interfering with G mail, its online email service, making it difficult for users to gain access of Google. It has been accused by Google earlier.

Over few weeks, Gmail access has been intermittent for users inside China, and some foreign journalists have reported that their accounts have been hacked into.

The problems have coincided with what appears to be an intensified campaign by the authorities to control the internet, following the unrest in the Middle East and a series of calls on the web for a similar "Jasmine" revolution in China.

Google said they could find no technical problems with Gmail or its main website.

"There is no technical issue on our side; we have checked extensively. There is a [Chinese] government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail," the company said in a statement.

Two weeks ago, Google also said that it had noticed "some highly targeted and apparently politically-motivated attacks against our users" in China. "We believe activists may have been a specific target," it added.

Google decided to close down its mainland China website and relocate its operations to Hong Kong following a series of attacks from Chinese hackers at the end of 2009.

The hackeres stole some google source code and also hacked the some gmail accounts of the Chinese Human Rights advocates.

The Chinese Foreign ministry had no immediate comment on Google's statement.

Meanwhile, computer analysts also said that China has rolled out a new layer of censorship infrastructure to prevent internet users inside China from "jumping over" the Great Firewall.

Until now, internet users, including many businesses inside China, have established private networks which help them circumvent censorship and send information confidentially.

However, several companies providing these "virtual private networks" have reported that their systems have been nullified in the past week.

Bing Market Share up 5%; Google Down 2% in February 2011

Saturday, March 12, 2011

Experian Hitwise's monthly look at search market share is out, and not much changed since January. Google is at top, Bing is coming up, Yahoo is still around the corner and the rest of the 69 search engines are mere and not worth mentioning.

After the jump from 21% in December to January, Bing increased its market share to 13.49% in February, up from 12.81 percent in January. Yahoo powered by Bing, experienced 3% gain (14.99 percent, up from 14.62 percent), meaning Bing-powered search had a 28.48 percent market share in February.

Search market share  of Google fell again, to 66.69% from 67.95 %.
Yet again, Matt Cutts will not be pleased, but both Yahoo and Bing saw much "search success rates" (i.e., searches lead to visit to a website) than Google -- 81 percent vs. just under 66 percent.

After increasing by 5% last month, longer search queries also declined in February by 2%.

Facebook is not closing down on March 15

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

If you spend a better part of your life living out of Facebook, rejoice. Facebook won’t be closing on March 15 after all. Surprised? Read on …

More than one million people have already fallen for a hoax that claims that the popular social networking site will be shutting down on March 15.

According to IT security firm Sophos, a bogus news story published by the Weekly World News, said Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had told reporters that managing [Facebook] has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.

Some panic-stricken Facebook users and mischief-mongers spread the story far and wide across the internet in no time. Although Facebook debunked the hoax via its Twitter account late on Sunday, users still continue to pass the bogus messages onto their online friends.

The Weekly World News article went on to quote another company official, Avrat Humarthi, vice-president of technical affairs at Facebook, as saying After March 15th the whole website shuts down. So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.

Sophos said that many people would not believe the report, which comes from a newspaper that has previously reported George Clooney is running for president and that alien spacecrafts will visit earth in 2011. However, it only takes only a small number of people to think it might be possible to turn a joke of a news story into an internet hoax as has been proved many a times in the past few years.

I certainly wouldn’t disagree that users would be wise to have their own backup of their photographs, rather than rely on Facebook — but it’s nothing more than a scare to suggest to people that they have to do it before March15th because Facebook is going to close down, explained Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

There’s an important lesson here — don’t believe everything you read on the internet, and think twice before you pass a story on to your friends.

Although a hoax is not as serious as malware worming its way between users and stealing information, it’s still a nuisance, clogging up communications, increasing the overall level of spam and perhaps leading people to make decisions for the wrong reasons.
